Welcome to Back to Balance's monthly blog on developing a growth mindset in 2025!
Here we are, already in February—how’s the year shaping up for you? Did January serve as a test run, giving you a glimpse of what this year has in store? Personally, New Year’s resolutions don’t quite work for me anymore… if they ever did. By the time January ends, so do my resolutions! But you know what does work? A growth mindset. Why? Because January acts as a trial month, a checkpoint to reflect on what’s been working and what hasn’t. It’s time to switch things up and start the year on a fresh note.
Now that January’s trial run is behind us, I’ve got a question for you: How well do you truly know yourself? You might be wondering why this matters—well, here's why: so many of us fall into the trap of repeating the same habits year after year, expecting different results. Sound familiar? Yep, I’ve been there too! We can easily fall into a "Groundhog Day" cycle of habits. We’re creatures of comfort, right? But if we want to foster a growth mindset, we need to step out of that zone and change things up.
TIP: Your mindset is shaped by what you focus on the most!
I’m not suggesting you overhaul everything right away. But I remember hearing something during my NLP practitioner training: "Change one thing, and you might be surprised by how it positively impacts other areas of your life."
We all have aspects of ourselves that need balancing, right? So, for this month, I challenge you to reflect on how well you know yourself. After all, we all change over time, so why not change a pattern that’s holding you back from trying something new?
Here are 4 ways to begin mixing things up and add some excitement to your "Groundhog Day" routine:
Consume new content – Try something different! Listen to a new genre of music, pick up a new sport, or take a different route to work or school. The key is to expose yourself to something fresh and stimulating.
Step out of your comfort zone – What’s one small thing you can do today to break free from the familiar? It doesn’t have to be huge—just a little push outside your usual habits.
Meet new people – Even something as simple as smiling at a stranger or saying hello can spark a chain reaction of positivity. You’d be amazed by how these small interactions can affect the broader community.
Find newness in your daily routine – Look for ways to add novelty to your everyday tasks. Even the idea of "newness" itself can be energising.
TIP: To cultivate a growth mindset, be kind to yourself as you uncover areas for improvement. Remember, we’re all a work in progress.
On a more professional note, think about the experts you turn to when things aren’t working: a mechanic when your car breaks down, a hairstylist to cut and style your hair, or a repair technician when something needs fixing. But who do you turn to when your mind feels cluttered, when you’re struggling to reach your goals or break old habits?
If you’re ready to balance out those thoughts and refresh your mindset this year, feel free to reach out! I’d love to help guide you through the process.
Here's to a year of growth and change!
